Story
On Friday, April 7th the SLC hosted a group of 7 recently
graduated grad students from UTK CURENT including Derek Kou
(Dominion Virginia Power), Hesen Liu(Dominion Virginia Power),
Lingwei Zhan (ORNL), Lakshmi Goppi Reddy (CNH Industrial),
Cameron Riley (EPRI), Weimin Zhang (Tesla), and Jing Xue
(zee.aero). For smooth transition from academia to industry,
different ways of networking, internship before graduation, and
participate in discussion during conferences are emphasized. To
keep updating resume is also suggested. After the
discussion, students at UTK and the recent graduates
participated in an informal lab tour with light snacks and
refreshments provided.

Dr. Blalock and
Dr. Qi Receive Awards at Chancellor's Honors Banquet
Congratulations to Dr. Blalock and Dr. Qi. Dr. Hairong Qi and
Dr. Benjamin Blalock revieved awards at the 2017 Chancellor's
Honors Banquet on April 19th. Dr. Qi received the 2017 Research
and Creative Achievement award and Dr. Blalock recieved the 2017
Alexander Prize.

Win Awards at Chancellor's Honors Banquet
Several CURENT students were awarded Honors at the Chancellors
Honors Banquet on April 19th. The 2017 Extraordinary
Professional Promise was awarded to Linquan Bai, Hantao Cui, Liu
Liu, Yiwei Ma, Alireza Rahimpour, Yang Song, Micah Joel Till,
Bin Wang, Wenxuan Yao and Jiecheng “Jeff” Zhao. Extraordinary
Professional Promise honors are awarded to undergraduate and
graduate students who demonstrate professional promise in
teaching, research or other contributions. Robert Austin Mcever
as awarded the 2017 Top Collegiate Scholar Award. The Top
Collegiate Scholar Awards honor undergraduates who exhibit
extraordinary scholarship. Congratulations to all our
extraordinary students!!
Summer Fabus
(Church) Receives Bodonheimer Fellowship
Summer Fabus, formerly Summer Church, has been named as one of
the new recipients of the Bodenheimer Fellowship named in honor
of Prof. Robert Doenheimer who taught ECE for 40 years prior to
his retirement. The fellowships are awarded to superior or
deserving EECS graduates from UT to encourage them to stay on
for graduate school at UT. Summer will work for Dr. Liu
and will be doing a joint MS in EE and MBA program.

Past Seminars
On April 21, Daniel Douglas, PhD student of RPI, gave a
presentation on A simpli?ed voltage stability analysis method is
to use a static Thevenin equivalent to represent the electrical
connection to a load center at CURENT SLC Seminar. Alyssa
Loveday, Jacqueline Adams, and Dr. Chen-fei Chen presneted
presented on "Cultural and English-speaking norms" in the second
session of the seminar.

2017 CURENT site Visit
2017 CURENT Site Visit dates are confirmed. CURENT's 2017
industry day and NSF/DOE site visit will be held in Knoxville,
Tennessee on November 14 - 16.

Outreach Events
There are a lot of upcoming events in June and July. Volunteers
are requested for the events including YSP (HS researchers),
eVol9 (9th Graders), Adventures in STEM (girl-only camp), 4-H

Social Event
NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Bracket
Challenge
On Monday, April 3rd the SLC hosted a watch party for the NCAA
Men's Basketball Championship Game in Room 124, Min H. Kao on
the big projector along with snacks. There was a total of 39
participants for the online bracket challenge. Jeremy
Herwig, Peter Pham, and Kamal Sabi are the winners of the online
bracket challenge.
Post seminar meeting at Downtown Grill &
Brewery
SLC hosted a social event/mixer at Downtown Grill and
Brewery for further interaction between students and alumni.
Students got the opportunity to discuss specific questions or
career suggestion from the alumni.
