Title: A Systematic Approach for Dynamic Security Assessment and the Corresponding Preventive Control Scheme Based on Decision Trees

Abstract: The presentation will introduce application of decision tree based data mining techniques for power system stability and control and review related previous works. Then, the speaker will present a new decision tree (DT)-based systematic approach for cooperative online power system dynamic security assessment (DSA) and preventive control. This approach adopts a new methodology that trains two contingency-oriented DTs on a daily basis by the databases generated from power system simulations. Fed with real-time wide-area measurements, one DT of measurable variables is employed for online DSA to identify potential security issues for real-time situational awareness, and the other DT of controllable variables provides online decision support on preventive control strategies against those identified issues. A cost-effective algorithm is adopted in this new approach to optimize the trajectory of preventive control. Some other supporting techniques are introduced, e.g. the importance sampling algorithm on efficient database preparation for power systems with high penetration of wind power and distributed generation. The performance of the new approach is demonstrated on an operational model of Western Danish power system.
Biography: Dr. Sun is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and also a member of CURENT's research group. Before coming to the University of Tennessee, Dr. Sun was a Project Manager in Grid Operations and Planning at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, California. He is also currently an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid.
Dr. Sun earned both his Ph.D. in Control Science and Engineering and a B.S. degree in Automation from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.
