Abstract: In this seminar, the motivation of using adaptive PI control for voltage regulation will be discussed based on an example of a distributed energy resource (DER). In the proposed method, the PI control gains are dynamically tuned based on the adaptive control approach for a single DER case in a distribution network. Then, the case with multiple DERs are discussed with various simulations under difference disturbances. Finally, the adaptive control approach is applied to STATCOM for transmission system voltage regulation.
Bio: Dr. Fangxing (Fran) Li is presently an associate professor in the Department of EECS at The University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK). He also serves as the Campus Director of CURENT research center.
Professor Li received his BSEE and MSEE degrees both from Southeast University (China) in 1994 and 1997, respectively, and then his Ph.D. degree from Virginia Tech (USA) in 2001. He had worked at ABB Electrical System Consulting in Raleigh, NC, from 2001 to 2005, as a senior engineer and then a principal engineer. He joined the faculty of UTK in August 2005. His current research interests include power markets, renewable energy integration, smart grid, and distributed energy resources. He has published 60 journal papers and 100 conference papers and holds a US patent.
Professor Li is a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the state of North Carolina, a Fellow of IET, Vice Chair of IEEE PES Power System Planning and Implementation (PSPI) committee, and the 3rd President of North America Chinese Power Professional Association (NACPPA) during 2013 to 2015. He served or is serving as an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, an Editor of IEEE Power and Energy Society Letters, a Guest Editor of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, an Editor of International Journal of Power and Energy Systems, and an Editorial Board Member of Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy (MPCE).
