Title: Leveraging Hardware-in-the-Loop for Energy Systems Integration Research
Presenter: Blake Lundstrom, Senior Research Engineer and the Acting Group Manager for the Integrated Devices and Systems Group, NREL
Abstract: The continued integration of distributed energy resources (DERs)—such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery inverters—in electric power networks worldwide presents new opportunities and risks for grid modernization. New DER device capabilities, coordinated control approaches, and information and communication technology (ICT) offer innovative solutions for enabling a more efficient and resilient grid, but also require sophisticated validation techniques to ensure successful integration with existing integrated energy systems. Real-time Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation techniques offer a comprehensive validation approach that can leverage large-scale power system models, simulated and physical ICT infrastructure, and physical controller and power hardware under test. Blake will present approaches and results from a variety of NREL projects leveraging HIL techniques to evaluate integrated energy systems including advanced PV inverters, industrial distribution management systems, microgrid controllers and systems, and megawatt-scale wind turbines.
Biography: Blake Lundstrom is a Senior Research Engineer and the Acting Group Manager for the Integrated Devices and Systems Group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. His research is focused on integration of distributed and renewable energy resources into the electric distribution system and involves distribution system modeling, advanced power electronics development, design of control techniques for managing large-scale deployments of DER, and the use of real-time hardware-in-the-loop techniques for energy systems integration research. Blake is the Secretary for IEEE P2004: Recommended Practice for Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation Based Testing of Electric Power Apparatus and Controls and a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Colorado.
