Introduction to Phasor Measurement Units & Applications
Instructor: Dr. Joe Chow; Dean, Thrust Leader; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Date: April 8, 2014
Course Description: The U.S. Department of Energy and utility companies have recently partnered to install many phasor measurement units (PMUs) to capture dynamic measurements. These PMUs, synchronized by a timing signal from the GPS system, provide unprecedented visibility and enhance the reliability of the power grid.
This PMU short course provides an overview of many aspects of synchrophasor data, from data collection to data application. The course is useful for engineers and system operators to more fully grasp the design and operation of a synchrophasor network. A list of topics covered in the short course is listed below.
The short courses materials are based on standards, recent results, and studies performed by the presenter and other researchers.
Course Topics Include:
- Phasors
- Historical perspectives
- Phasor computation in a Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU)
- PMU performance specifications – C37.118.1
- Phasor data concentration – C37.118.2
- Communication networks and cyber security
- Latency analysis
- PMU placement
- Disturbance triggering
- Disturbance signatures
- Combined spatial-temporal analysis of PMU data
