Title: Fault Location Using Sparse L1 Estimator and Phasor Measurement Units
Abstract: This presentation presents an approach that allows system-wide fault location using only a sparse set of synchronized phasor measurements. The proposed algorithm is a practical application of the sparse estimation method by using prony analysis to predict post-fault steady state voltages at those buses equipped with phasor measurement units. The prediction requires only a short transient recording, which is typically available before the operation of the protective relays. Following the prediction step, the LASSO based sparse estimation algorithm is employed in order to identify the fault location. A 3-phase ATP model of the IEEE 118 bus system is developed in order to simulate realistic fault transients and test the performance and accuracy of the proposed fault location method.
Bio: Arthur Mouco received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niteroi, Brazil, in 2006. He received M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2011. From 2007 to 2015 he worked as post-operation analysis engineer at the Brazilian independent system operator (ONS). He is currently pursuing the PhD degree at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, United States.

Title: Chance-constrained optimal location of damping control actuators under wind power variability
Abstract: This presentation proposes a new probabilistic energy-based method to determine the optimal installation location of electronically-interfaced resources (EIRs) considering dynamic reinforcement under wind variability in systems with high penetration of wind power. The oscillation energy and total action are used to compare the dynamic performance for different EIR locations. A linear approximation of the total action critically reduces the computational time from hours to minutes. Simulating an IEEE-39 bus system with 30% of power generation sourced from wind, a chance-constrained optimization is carried out to decide the location of an energy storage system (ESS) adding damping to the system oscillations. The results show that the proposed method, selecting the bus location that guarantees the best dynamic performance with highest probability, is superior to both traditional dominant mode analysis and arbitrary benchmarks for damping ratios.
Bio: Mr. Horacio Silva-Saravia was born in Valparaiso, Chile. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Federico Santa Maria Technical University, Chile in 2014. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN, United States. His research area includes power system dynamics, stability and control, energy storage modeling, energy storage applications for power systems and renewable energy integration.
