Title: Operational Data: Promise and Pitfalls of using Twitter Data in Practice
Abstract: Twitter offers the tantalizing possibility to crowd-source timely and geographically localized data that could be used to measure and model social phenomena, such as people's behavior during disasters. We describe an effort to utilize this data to understand what happens during hurricanes and find a number of challenges related to the ability to localize the tweets or events they describe, the ability to filter relevant tweets, and limitations of annotating tweets using emotion, opinion, and sentiment. We also describe the infrastructure built to support such activities and promising next steps.
Bio: Audris Mockus is Ericsson-Harlan D. Mills Chair Professor of Digital Archeology and Evidence Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer science at University of Tennessee. His research interests include software engineering, open source, operational data, statistics, and optimization.
