Title: What is energy efficiency for? Energy justice, energy practice and flexibility demand

Abstract: This presentation examines energy consumption of low-income, mid-income and high-income households from a bottom-up approach. Using the data from two U.S. national surveys - American Time Use Survey and Residential Energy Consumption Survey, this research compares the time of major energy-related household activities (e.g., laundry) and space heating-cooling habits (i.e., thermostat setpoints and control strategies) across income groups. The presentation also discusses the social-psychological factors related to energy consumption within each income group.

Bio: Dr. Chien-fei Chen, Ph.D. in Sociology, is a Research Professor and Director of Education & Diversity at NSF-DOE Engineering Research Center for Ultra-wide-area Resilient Electrical Energy Transmission Networks (CURENT), Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the University of Tennessee. Her research focuses on social psychological analysis and interdisciplinary occupant behavior research (both at the individual, and group levels), occupant energy conservation behaviors, demand response and public acceptance of renewable energy technology.

Bio: Xiaojing Xu, Ph.D. is a social psychologist by training and works as a postdoctoral research associate at CURENT. Her research interests are pro-social and pro-environmental decision making. Her current research focuses on the attitudinal and behavioral aspects of energy consumption, demand response and technology adoption.
