Title: Strengthening power system dynamics for increased renewable energy
Abstract: Due to increasing penetration levels of renewable energy, grid robustness is on the path to become a very critical problem and adequate actions must be set forth along this path to overcome the challenges of the future power grid. One of Dr. Pulgar’s main research goals is to enhance power grid robustness against critical disturbances. In this talk, Dr. Pulgar will summarize the main achievements of his research team on this subject. In particular, the basic concepts for strategic reinforcement will be laid down for single-mode-dominant systems, and advanced control ideas such as controller coordination and discrete control will be presented.
Bio: Dr. Pulgar was born in Los Angeles, Chile. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Concepcion, Chile, in 2001 and 2003, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2010. He became a Fulbrighter in 2006. He held academic positions at the Federico Santa Maria Technical University, Chile, from 2001 to 2014. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is a member of the IEEE, and the Center for Ultra-Wide-Area Resilient Electric Energy Transmission Network (CURENT). In 2021, he was recipient of the prestigious NSF CAREER Award to work on discrete control actions for power system dynamic performance enhancement. His main research areas are power system dynamics, energy storage systems, and renewable power generation.
