Dr. Kristen Cetin Gives CURENT Power and Energy Seminar on Sept. 11

Dr. Kristen Cetin will give the CURENT Power and Energy Seminar (ECE 496 and 691) on Friday, September 11, from from 12:20 pm to 1:10 pm. The seminar will be available via ZOOM. The ZOOM link will be sent to CURENT students and faculty through email. Contact Wendy if you need a link.

Presenter: Dr Kristen Cetin, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Michigan State University

Title: "Advancing Smart, Sustainable and Grid-Interactive Buildings in an Era of COVID-19"

Abstract: Building operations consume approximately 40% of energy and 72% of electricity in the United States and are responsible for up to 70% of the peak demand on the electric grid.  The increasing use of technologies such as smart meters, energy management systems, IoT, and smart and connected devices and their associated data provide an opportunity for real-time, data-driven operation and evaluation of the performance of buildings and their systems. This is particularly important as we face challenges in energy price fluctuations, distributed and renewable energy grid integration, climate variability, and most recently COVID-19. This seminar will first discuss recent research advances in the use of advanced technologies which help to implement methods to reduce building energy loads while also balancing building occupant thermal and/or visual comfort needs. We will then discuss the impact that COVID-19 has had on the use of buildings and the potential implications for smart building design and operation in the future.

Bio: Dr Kristen Cetin is an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.  She is a licensed Professional Engineer with over 10 years of experience in the construction, building and building systems industry in both academia and industry. Her current research involves a range of projects in the areas of design, construction and operation of sustainable and grid-interactive buildings. This includes assessing and improving building performance while maintaining comfortable indoor environmental conditions and supporting grid reliability. She currently leads several major projects as PI funded by ARPA-E, ASHRAE, the Sloan Foundation, industry sponsors, and NSF, and is involved in other research sponsored by EPA, FAA, and state DOTs. Prior to MSU, she was a faculty member at Iowa State University. She received her PhD at the University of Texas at Austin in Civil Engineering, worked as a consulting engineer at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger in Washington DC.  Dr. Cetin is an active member of ASHRAE, including Technical Committee (TC) 7.5, MTG.OBB, and CEC, and is the Smart Grid Subcommittee Chair for TC 7.5.
