Title: What Does It Mean to Be a Professional Engineer (P.E.)?
Abstract: This seminar will provide a brief introduction on the steps needed to become a registered professional engineer. Also covered will be some of the benefits, responsibilities, and typical work done by professional engineers.
Bio: Dr. Leon M. Tolbert received the Bachelor’s, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech. He worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Oak Ridge, TN, from 1991 until 1999 on electric distribution and power quality projects. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1999. He is currently the Min H. Kao Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, The University of Tennessee. He is a founding member and systems testbeds thrust leader for the National Science Foundation/Department of Energy Engineering Research Center, CURENT. He is also a part-time Senior Research Engineer with the Power Electronics and Electric Machinery Research Center, ORNL. Dr. Tolbert is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Tennessee and a Fellow of the IEEE. He conducts research in the application of wide bandgap devices to data center power supplies, medium voltage utility applications, and electric vehicles.
Presenter: Mr. Peter Pham, Master's Candidate, University of Tennessee
Title: Overview and Tips on Taking the Fundamental Engineering (FE) Exam
Abstract: The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is generally your first step in the process to becoming a professional licensed engineer (P.E.). It is designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program. In this talk, I would give an overall introduction of the FE exam including its format, structure, exam topics, and testing location, etc. On top of that, I would provide some handy tips on effectively preparing and taking the exam in order to get a good score. Finally, I would show everyone how to get the reimbursement from the school to cover the exam fee.
Bio: Peter Pham is a Master candidate in Dr. Tolbert's group and a Graduate Research Assistant working under Dr. Danniel Costinett. He received his Bachelor's degree from UT in May 2018. Peter's interest areas are wireless power transfer (WPT) and wide bandgap semiconductor applications.
