Title: Models & Methods to Simulate Large-Scale Power Electronics
Abstract: As the penetration of power electronics increases in the grid, high-fidelity dynamic models of power electronics will play a prominent role in understanding the stability of the grid. Towards the same, advanced simulation algorithm and modeling methods will be needed to aid in fast simulation of grids with high-penetration of large power electronics systems. The simulation algorithms and modeling methods need to evolve with the corresponding evolution of computing resources. The traditional computing devices are increasingly moving towards multi-core CPU and CPU-GPU capabilities. The algorithms developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory cater towards increased means to parallelize simulation of the dynamics of the states in the large power electronics systems. The algorithms include spatial and temporal parallelism techniques. The spatial parallelism is based on numerical stiffness based hybrid discretization. The temporal parallelism is based on reduced-order and high-fidelity models utilized in multigrid reduction in time (MGRIT) problems that enable time-based parallelism. The speed-up from spatial parallelism is shown to be up 25x with respect to existing algorithms and from temporal parallelism is up to N times with the use of N cores. Various implementations of these algorithms will be discussed during the presentation.
Bio: Suman Debnath received his bachelors and masters from Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) in 2010, and doctoral degree from Purdue University in 2015. He has since been working with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and is a research and development (R&D) staff over there. He has published over 25 publications and has been awarded several projects worth millions. His research interests include applied mathematics for simulation, modeling, and control of power electronics in various applications (including high-voltage direct current systems, wind, PV, high-power drives, among others).
