Title: A Modular Multilevel Converter with Self Voltage Balancing and a Real DC Capacitor-Less Solid-State Variable Capacitor

Abstract:

Abstract: This week's seminar will be two-fold: 1) A Modular Multilevel Converter with Self Voltage Balancing and 2) A Real DC Capacitor-Less Solid-State Variable Capacitor.

  1. Conventionally, the modular multilevel converter (MMC) is deemed to have no inherit voltage balancing property without voltage monitoring and control. This presentation will mathematically demonstrate that MMC capacitor voltage is self-balanced by nature if considering certain sub-module patterns. Upon the math proof, a novel modulation, namely Y-Matrix Modulation (YMM), is proposed to transform the math analysis into modulation practice. With the proposed YMM, MMCs are secured self voltage balancing. Several YMM based MMC case studies are provided for verification purposes.
  2. H-bridge based single-phase applications have second-order harmonics on the dc-bus voltage. Conventionally, the second-order harmonics are filtered by bulky dc capacitors to maintain the constant dc-bus voltage, which results in low power density. However, in applications like solid-state variable capacitors (SSVC), the constant dc-bus voltage is unnecessary since the dc bus is disconnected from load or source. This seminar will present a real dc capacitor-less SSVC, which removes the dc capacitors from the topology by releasing the constraints on dc bus voltage fluctuation.
