Title: Electric Power Quality: Concept Overview and Methods for Improvement
Abstract: The electric power system is always subjected to a wide variety of disturbances. Power quality is a broad concept. It refers to any disturbance/change in the power (voltage, current, or frequency) that interferes with normal operation of electrical equipment. It is the susceptibility of the end-use equipment that defines the necessary level of power quality. The IEEE/IEC standards define around 20 power quality indices. The major power quality indices can be classified into voltage magnitude, voltage waveform and frequency indices. The voltage magnitude includes the voltage swell/sag and over-voltage/under voltage; the voltage waveform includes harmonics and transients; while frequency includes over-frequency and under-frequency disturbances. This talk will provide a high-level review on the concept of major power quality issues and the existing approaches to improving the power quality. In particular, the relations between different power quality issues are also discussed.
Bio: Qingxin Shi received his B.S. and M.Sc. degrees at Zhejiang University, China, and the University of Alberta, Canada, in 2011 and 2014, respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN in 2019. He is currently working as a research staff member for CURENT. His research interest includes power quality, demand response and distribution system resilience.
